Petrushka recreated by Goodwood Area Schools

A new opera is currently being devised by 200 children from the Goodwood Area Schools

Petrushka - the character that has inspired composers and storytellers since the 17th Century, including Stravinsky, is being renewed by young people from West Sussex Primary Schools.

Goodwood Area Schools – a group of seven small rural primary schools situated on the outskirts of Chichester, are working with renowned composer, conductor and pianist Howard Moody to create a piece of theatre based on this classic folk tale. The project will culminate with a world premier at Chichester Festival Theatre on 28 February 2012 at 6.30pm.

This project is enabling participants of mixed abilities, including those with special needs in mainstream education, to come together and work alongside a professional team including a composer, director, actor, singer and dancer.  The children use their imaginations in an organic and inspirational way to generate the material for this newly devised opera.  Working almost entirely without pen and paper, using movement, musical imagination, storytelling and vocal expression to create this piece of community theatre, the children are also exploring many personal, social and developmental issues, providing a tool box of skills to enhance their learning capacities and strengthen communities through building new relationships.

These schools have little access to community events due to the nature of their rural location and for many of the children and families involved, this will not only be their first taste of Opera but first time in a theatre too.

Don’t miss this enriching opportunity to see 200 children bring their version of Petrushka to life. They will be accompanied on stage by a small band, including virtuoso violinist Ken Aiso and guitarist Adrian Zolotuhin.

This is a collaborative project between Create2learn, Chichester Festival Theatre and La Folia.
